KROP is a community-based research study to help assess and inform descriptions of BDSM found in human sexuality textbooks. Historical framing of BDSM within psychology and psychiatry have relied primarily on individualistic, non-empirical theory and select-sample research. In turn, this powerful lens may obfuscate what BDSM might actually mean to practitioners, and in particular those who seek out organized BDSM communities.
KROP brings together community members to describe the role of BDSM communities, then scientifically examines the way these features are (or are not) represented in textbooks. This new knowledge will assist human sexuality textbook editors in improving how BDSM is represented by incorporating member perspectives in describing the role, meaning, and function of organized BDSM communities.
